Mining is pretty self explanatory here. Much like other MMOs, you gather ore by mining it. In Rift, however, you do not need to carry around a pick or any other tool to gather materials.
Simply start gathering ore to skill up Mining. The following indicates which level you'll need to go back to the mining trainer in the main city (Meridian, Sanctum) to learn to smith the next ore type.
Tip: Selling your excess bars of metal can make you a lot of platinum quickly! Check the current amount of bars in the AH and add the type that there is the least of. Iron, Titanium, Chromite and Carmintium are a sure bet. Compare the price of one ore versus one bar of the same metal to decide which is going to give you the best profit.

TIP: Save your mined stone peices that yeild gems for the new crafting weekly quests. Either for you to hand in weekly, or sell in the Auction House for good cash. The crafting mining weekly includes 10 ore and 10 stones that yield gems.

Rare Recipes – Quests
For some smelted bars, you must learn a recipe not available from the regular mining trainer. The quest item drops are mined from either ore type in the final recipe.
