Historically, the Runic alphabet was a first type of method used to represent language in a physical form – a way of writing down words. One of the most well-known runes are the Futhark runes, originating in Scandinavia. Over time, runes also became a way of telling omens (or divination) and began to have a mystical, or magical, nature. One would roll the runes, like dice, to tell their future. Or the future of someone else.

Runecrafting is a Rift profession that creates magical runes to boost or add stats to gear and weapons. Runes have a one-use option, though there may be multi-use runes available in the game or with later recipes. The collector's edition of Rift included a multi-use rune that added +3 endurance to a weapon.

In addition to making runes, a Runecrafter can also "Runebreak" items. Runebreaking an item returns materials needed to craft runes. Various Powders, shards and Crystals are only found through runebreaking. These materials can be combined for a higher quality, or broken down for a lesser quality. Runecrafting does not require any other professions to supply materials, but it is wise to take another profession that creates items you can runebreak. Outfitting, Armorcrafting or Weaponsmithing would make good choices. Or you could always opt to take a gathering profession such as Foraging, Butchery or Mining to help supplement your income by selling the materials in the Auction House.

Novice Runecrafter 1- 75

TIP: To get level relevant ingredients, Runebreak gear/items the same level as your Runecrafting skill. This guarantees ingredients you need – you won't need to transmute as often. Mouse over the runes you are making to find out what level range they apply to.

Skilled Runecrafter 75-150

TIP: For runes that can be applied to multiple slots, also sell them in the AH in multiples. Example: Dim Deft Rune is applicable to shoulders and chest, sell them in a minimum quantity of 2.

Expert Runecrafter 150-225

TIP: Lower level players are looking for main stat boosts such as Dex, Str, Wis, Int. Higher level players also want Spell Power, Spell Crit, Attack Power, and Physical Crit.
